Monsters University - WHAT IS THAT SONG????

So we just got back from seeing Monsters University today and I could not get that song out of my head.

No, not the Randy Newman one. I mean no disrespect, but good old Randy could not have composed something this catchy, complicated, and hip. Jazz meets good old fashioned marching band, the song had me searching high and low.

Curiously, it does not appear on the official Monsters University soundtrack. There is only one non Randy Newman track on the soundtrack and considering the song I was searching for appears not once, BUT THREE times, you might think it deserves top billing.

So I googled it. And thank you very much interweb, because low and behold I found it... and immediately downloaded it.



They are the MarchFourth Marching Band and the song is called "Gospel".  They are from Portland Oregon, and from what I can gather they are uber band geeks that also joined Jazz Band and maybe dreamed of joining the circus one day. In other words, awesome.  Maybe Randy was feeling threatend and asked that their song not be included on the soundtrack because he knows he has some serious competition. Whatever the case, it's weird since the Marchfourth Marching Band rocks the house and must be promoted.

So if you see MU and think to yourself, "what the hell is that song. I need it." I've done the research for you, and you are very welcome.

Now go and support them if you live in the Portland, OR area and be sure and tell them they need to make a road trip to Boston.

Disney/Pixar Brave -- a 4-Year Old Review

This past weekend my 4-year old son and I went to see Brave. Here is his review...

shortly after this was taken I ate all his popcorn

Me: Grayson, what did you think of the movie?
Grayson: Good
Me: did you have a favorite part?
Grayson: Good
Me: No, listen. I'm asking you if you had a favorite part. What did you like best.
Grayson: I dunno. Ummmmm. Can we have a playdate with Brendan?
Me: We're not talking about that right now. Tell me about the movie.
Grayson: It was good. <long pause> The bear was scary. <longer pause as I look at him expectantly> And they said "this means war"

(For the record, someone from the Scottish clan did say "this means war" right before a fight scene. Not sure why this stuck with him.)

So there you have it. The evil bear was scary but he soldiered through covering his ears (not sure why ears and not eyes) during the higher stress moments. Depending on your little one Brave could be too much for the 4 and under set, but an appropriately timed bathroom break might do the trick during those ear covering scenes.

Thor Lays the Hammer Bling Ring Down

When I think of the Avengers merchandise I think of  boys stocking up on Iron Man masks, fake Hulk fists, and plastic Thor hammers.  And frankly, I feel a little left out.

I just saw The Avengers last week and I found myself regularly leaning over to my husband whispering, "I think Hawkeye is hot, who's your favorite". He would respond with an exasperated, "There is only one woman so it's not a fun game for me."

In any event, I really enjoyed the movie (see our 11-year-old boy review) and since I am not in the habit of collecting action figures, I was hoping for some girl-friendly Avengers merchandise.

Behold, the 1928 collection of Marvel Comics inspired jewelry. I will forgive their lack of Hawkeye in the collection since there are some cute substitutes.

Some of my favs from the collection:

A bling bling Thor Hammer ring ($22) - I imagine wearing this in the mall where a 10 year old boy will stop me, point to the ring, and nod knowingly. We bump fists and he heads into Game Stop and I continue on to J Crew.

How about busting out some double terrycloth Captain America wristbands the next time you visit the gym ($10)? These bad boys are sure to keep the workout moving, or at the very least, make you the coolest kid in the spin class. Shield not included.

Hawkeye makes a girl need to dab her brow. Lawdy.

With Eyes Like That You Don't Need A Costume

  I absolutely LOVE Makeup . I am not nor never will be one of those women who just wakes up and can run out to get a loaf of bread fresh faced .  Even if I was , I feel like I'd still feel compelled to apply some gloss, mascara my lashes and groom the brows. Everything about makeup makes me happy and I pride myself in having some skillz with the brushes. If I could, I'd work at MAC and walk around all day with fuchsia eyes and fake lashes.

  I'm sure you can also guess that I LOVE Disney and don't you know that I found some absolutely amazing Disney inspired makeup! It's pretty amazing to look out and waaaayy outside of my skill level and comfort zone.  Makeup artist Katie Alves transformed scenes from some classic Disney films into unbelievable eye makeup

You're gonna need a bigger boat...

If you know me then you know that "Jaws" is one of my all time favorite movies. Whenever it's on the television, I watch it. I bring the DVD to the beach with me every year to watch while there and as luck would have it, the same week I am at coast is also Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. Bonus!

I am fascinated, horrified and in awe of sharks all at the same time. My nerdy son has picked up on this love of the big fish and reads about them himself. Perhaps it's just in our New England blood. Needless to say though I do NOT want any sharks of any variety sharing my ocean space with me whilst swimming, so it is with mixed feelings that I report to you that within the last 2 weeks 9 big daddy sharks have been spotted off the coast of Chatham in Cape Cod. Three of them were just this past Wednesday! Good grief.

They were estimated to be between 10 and 16 feet long, about 100 yards off shore and one was 20 yards away from a clueless swimmer. All of this was reported from a professional shark swimmer, an occupation I never knew existed. Also reported were 3 grey seal deaths that met their maker at the teeth of a shark. Poor babies, so cute to watch swim around the harbor. Swim far far away while you can!

Soooooo...will I be in Chatham soon to really be worried about this? Yes...yes I will. And will I be swimming while there to cool myself off after a hot day at the beach? No...no I will not.
